New Optimism for U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Thanks to Success at the Paris Olympics
Men’s gymnastics in the United States has been in decline for decades, with many high school and college programs being cut. Even prestigious programs at the University of Minnesota and the University of Iowa were cut in 2021. But the success of the U.S. men’s gymnastics team at the Paris Olympics, made up entirely of NCAA-trained athletes, has given college coaches a glimmer of hope.
The U.S. Olympic team, made up of athletes from institutions like Stanford, the University of Michigan, Penn State and even the now-defunct University of Minnesota, has made a name for itself. The success highlights the strength and potential of the remaining college programs, which currently number just 15 active—12 in Division I and three in Division III.
The addition of men’s gymnastics programs at smaller schools like Simpson College and Greenville University is another significant development. While both institutions are small, they are quickly becoming competitive. Greenville University, for example, finished higher than William & Mary and Army at the end of the season. This rapid progress is a positive sign for the future of the sport.
The NCAA’s introduction of name, image and likeness (NIL) agreements has also opened up new financial opportunities for athletes and programs. While gymnastics is not a major revenue-generating sport like football and basketball, NIL deals and personal sponsorships can offer new opportunities. The policy change, following a 2019 California law and a 2021 U.S. Supreme Court decision, allows athletes to benefit from endorsements and educational payments.
Stephen Nedoroscik’s standout performance at the Olympics, despite competing in only one event, has captured the public’s attention. His unique style and charismatic personality, as well as his technical skills, have added to the sport’s appeal. Nedoroscik’s success highlights the talent potential in college gymnastics and adds to the sport’s appeal as a whole.
Coaches such as Penn State’s Randy Jepson and Greenville’s Zach Peters have expressed strong optimism about the future of men’s gymnastics. They highlight the sport’s ability to provide opportunities for athletes who may not fit into other mainstream sports, as well as the unique challenges and rewards that gymnastics offers.
To maintain and build on the current momentum, it is important to support and expand opportunities at all levels, from youth programs to college teams. The visibility and success achieved at the Olympics can be a catalyst for further growth and investment in men’s gymnastics.
With a supportive environment, new financial opportunities, and growing interest from recent successes, the future of men’s gymnastics looks bright. The development of the sport will depend on a collective effort to cultivate talent and sustain programs, ensuring that the excitement and promise seen in recent competitions can translate into long-term growth.

Initiatives from small programs, NCAA policy changes, and the success of athletes like Nedoroscik provide a solid foundation for men’s gymnastics to grow and gain the recognition it deserves at the national and international levels.
